11 Blogger Questions, & An Unexpected Rec: Liebster Awards

Liebster AwardAlicia from the blog Momentos de Evasión gave me a bit of a shock listing me among her nominees for the Liebster Awards. Eeeee!

Okay, so there’s no gold-covered statuette involved or anything of the sort… it is merely a tag to acknowledge blogs you read and enjoy, and introduce them to other readers that might not yet have found them, a concept I love (though come to think of it, I can barely keep up with the ones I have bookmarked… )

But anyway, I’m happy to be listed, so I’ll gladly accept my nomination and participate in the tag (I’d like to thank the Academy, and such and such… )

So, for whoever doesn’t know how this thing works…

… nominees must answer the 11 questions posed by the blogger who nominated them
… thank and follow the people who nominated you
… write a post telling 11 things about yourself
… post an image of the Liebster Awards
… nominate 11 other bloggers
… create 11 questions for your nominees

And we’re off… starting from the bottom:

11 Q’s and their A’s

1 Why did you decide to start a blog?

Hmm… mainly because of my love for cosmetics and makeup, and social media, particularly blogs, and it happens that these things dovetail so well.

I calculate I have been blogging regularly for the last ten years or whereabouts. Not so much out of personal choice, but because during this period I’ve been tasked at work with writing from a handful of updates, to complete company blogs (because “you write so well [and also, because we’re too damn cheap to pay a proper writer or SM manager to do it right]”).

So one thing led to another, and now I can’t comprehend life without a blog; it is my medium, even though of course it bores me numb to write about serious industry stuff; so I decided I’d blog about something I liked, in a space where I could use my own voice.

2 Do you like reading blogs about various subjects, or do you stick to your theme?

Lately I stick to beauty blogs, mainly to try to keep up with fellow bloggers in my theme. I’d love to get back to following other types of blogs, but there’s only so much time in my free time.

3 Do you have any anecdotes to tell that originated from the blog?

So far, can’t recall any significant anecdote with this blog… I do know, however, that one of the reasons I was considered for my current job was my blogging experience.

4 What do you do when you’re not blogging?

Read, though sadly not as much as I’d like. I also often say I dislike TV, but that’s not quite true, because I do like many series and documentaries, and now and then a movie.

Sleep is good, and books are better…

About two years ago, I discovered as well that I enjoyed weight training, so after thirty-odd years of finding gyms and their fauna horrifying, I now like going there to train, something I never thought I’d say.

5 What product is an unmissable step in your daily routine?

Sunscreen. I admit I’m just a bit obsessed by sun dodging (when I was young, I was that goth girl white of face, long sleeves and ankle-length skirts, even if it was 30ºC outside). Now I thank my younger self I took suncare seriously.

6 A makeup item you never leave home without.

Mattifying powder or foundation, and eyeliner. I suppose I could run around without my Dothraki eyes and immutable face, but why would I want to?

8 What’s your favorite film?

That’s kind of like asking which is my favorite book, which in turn is kind of like asking which of my loved ones I’d least mind losing.

ATM the titles that pop into my mind are: Searching for Sugar Man, A Nun’s Story, Spirited Away, Marie Antoinette, Calendar Girls, All About My Mother, White Nights, Shall We Dance? (the Gere & J-Lo version’s okay, I guess, but my pick’s the Japanese original), Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (I don’t think this one has an English title… anyway, it’s a sweet, funny Bollywood film shot in Spain, years ago)… they’re hardly the only ones, and probably more names will come to me after hitting “Publish”.

Seen this way, it’s clear I have a preference for feel-good films. I also have a soft spot for the Sharknado saga… what can I say, I like a silly laugh.

8 What’s your favorite book?

Refer to answer above: how could I possibly choose? Off the top of my head, I remember that as a kid I loved G. A. Bécquer’s Legends, Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla, and the Shakespeare’s Tales by Charles and Mary Lamb; as an older teen/round 20 I had a phase of being mildly obsessed by Dorothy Parker’s short stories and poems.

Around that age I fell too into the Potterverse, but eventually grew sick of seeing all things Hogwarts all the time… I suppose that’s also bound to happen soon with the world of A Song of Ice & Fire / Game of Thrones; even so, I have to say that I find the phenomenon of fandom fascinating. I think it’s fantastic how it can draw together so many people, who often are quite distant apart, geographically and culturally. If that’s not magic, I don’t know what is.

My latest favorite was An Almond for a Parrot by Wray Delaney, which I read not long ago, and rather liked it. I also just began one that grabbed me from the cover Around the World in 80 Graveyards, by Fernando Gómez.

9 Which place would you like to visit next?

Oh, great, more difficult decisions… the list is long. Last autumn I was in Hong Kong, which I’d dreamed about for years, but it was a super-quick trip, so I couldn’t see or do much I wanted… here’s hoping for another chance of a proper visit.

Hello #HongKong!

I also often say I have to make it a priority of visiting San Francisco before the Big One comes and everything falls into the ocean, same as with the Twin Towers; my parents got to see them, but I couldn’t… saw the new ones being built. Come to think of it, wouldn’t mind making a third trip to NYC, I love it.

On the whole, urban destinations are my favorite… I love city life, walking and seeing people come and go, how they’re dressed, snoop bits of their conversations…

10 Favorite food

Carbs, and bad things in general. Well, I do enjoy my veggies too, but never as much as a good pizza.

11 A perfect weekend plan

Drinks on a terrace when it’s nice outside. Or just stay home and catch up with reading, series and such… actually my perfect weekend plan would require a fully self-cleaning, self-tidying home, so I could just forget anything that is not doing only and exclusively what I want.

… aaand the 11 nominees

After thinking about this for longer than I care to admit, I’ve reached the conclusion I cannot select 11 blogs for this part of the tag, partly because it’s like with questions 7 to 9: there are many I like for various reasons, and I don’t want to leave any out; besides, it’s likely that the list might not end up being that different to the one posted by Alicia in her original post.

So having reached this point, I’ve decided to nominate the first eleven commenters who declare their intention to take part in this tag.

Last, the 11 questions

Being something of a snoop, coming up with questions for the tag was a lot less difficult – here they are:

  1. A compliment or comment someone gave you, which made you feel like new?
  2. Pen name or real name for blogging, and why?
  3. A perfume (or two, or more) which bring you special memories.
  4. What do your fam/friends think about your hobby?
  5. Do you have a thing for collecting something? Raise your hand if you have twenty-six nude lipsticks in slightly different shades, or 500 shades of eyeshadow… )
  6. Your most recent musical obsession: a song, an artist, an album/OST…
  7. The last series you watched and loved.
  8. A book rec.
  9. A favorite place in your town.
  10. Is there any subject (related to your blog or niche) you’d never touch upon? If so, why?
  11. If you started your blog over again, what would you change, or do somehow differently?

So, who want’s to be a Liebster Awards nominée?
